Native “pagan” Estonians were animists and believed in the Gods of nature, even nowadays you can visit the sacred groves (called “hiied”) worshipped in the ancient Taara religion. Close to Tallinn near Pirita Harbour and beach is ruins of Pirita Convent. Convent was destroyed and initially abandoned due Livonic War 1558 – 1583 and by fire in 1564.
