We believe Estonia has one of the highest number of documented meteor craters per kilometre in the world. The most famous crater is at Kaali, Saaremaa, and now filled with water forming a lake 100 metres wide and 16 metres deep.
Another interesting lake is Mullutu Suurlaht – between winter and summer it changes from freshwater to salt water.
Fish are plentiful in Estonian lakes: mostly can find pike, perch, pikeperch, bream, carp and tench.
Most Estonian lakes are good for swimming and sailing, especially on Lake Peipsi and Lake Võrstjärv, is growing in popularity.
Smaller lakes and surrounding forests may be marked as privately owned land (Eramaa in Estonian) and are not open for public use without the permission of the owner.
